What to ask before you book a wedding photographer
Most couples meet a photographer once, scroll a feed, compare a quote and decide. It's a big decision to make on so little. These are the questions we'd ask if we were in your place, and how we answer them ourselves.
01
Can we see one full wedding, not just the highlights?
Any studio can put together twenty beautiful frames. What tells you more is one whole wedding, start to finish: the happy chaos of the haldi, the bridal entry, the hush before the muhurtham, the pheras as the light turns golden, the last song of the sangeet. Ask for a complete gallery and the full wedding film from a celebration like yours, whether it follows a South Indian rhythm or a North Indian one.
Ours are on the site, told the way we lived them: Shrishti & Akhil at Bangalore Palace, Varsha & Ajay's sunrise Telugu wedding, Dalima & Pawan's pheras by the backwaters of Poovar.
02
Who will actually be photographing us?
Many larger studios sell the founder's portfolio and send whoever is free that weekend. It's worth asking for names. We put the team together for each wedding based on its size, its mood and its people, and we'll tell you who's coming before you book.
03
Will we be posing all day?
Ask how they work on the day. Our approach is documentary: we stay out of the way and watch for what's real, a father trying not to cry at the kanyadaan, a mother pinning jasmine into her daughter's hair. We'll set aside a short window for portraits and guide you gently through it, and leave the rest of the day to you.
04
Do we have to pick a package?
Packages make sense for a studio's spreadsheet more than for your wedding. A two-day intimate ceremony and a four-day destination wedding need very different coverage. We shape coverage around your events, your guest list and what you'd like to keep, then quote for exactly that.
05
When will we get our photos and film?
Get this in writing, because timelines are where most disappointment begins. With us, a handful of sneak peeks arrive within about a week of the wedding, the full photo gallery within four to six weeks, and the films within eight to sixteen weeks, depending on how much there is to tell.
06
How do payments work?
Ask what's due when, and what happens if dates move. Usually we take half at booking to hold your dates and the rest on the last day of the shoot, but we're happy to shape a schedule that works for you.
07
Do you travel for weddings?
We're based in Bangalore and cover weddings all across India. Ask how travel and stay are handled in the quote, so there are no surprises later.
08
What do you need from us before the wedding?
A good photographer will ask you a lot of questions. We'll want your event schedule, the people who matter most to you (and the ones who'd be heartbroken to be missed), and anything about your families we should know. The more we know, the less you'll have to think about on the day.
09
How far ahead should we book?
As soon as your dates are fixed. The busiest season, roughly November to February, fills first, and we take on a limited number of weddings each year so we can give each one our full attention.
10
Do we actually like each other?
This is the one nobody writes on a checklist. Your photographer will be beside you through some of the most private moments of your life. Get on a call, talk about something other than packages, and notice how it feels. If it's easy, that ease will show in your photographs.
